National Prevention Week Kicks Off — Celebrating All Facets of Prevention
NPW is all about celebrating all facets of prevention, highlighting innovation, and telling our story. Substance use prevention is so important. When prevention occurs, everything falls into place to keep our communities and the youth who live in them healthy and safe.
Part of sharing our story begins with clarifying misperceptions and creating positive norms.
Alcohol causes seven different types of cancer, including breast cancer in women. So why is it the norm to raffle alcohol or have it as a prize for cancer charities? Would a lung cancer charity or benefit give away a carton of cigarettes as a prize?
In Illinois, youth are accessing alcohol from their parents or guardians at a greater rate than accessing it from a party. Numerous studies reassert the fact that youth listen to their parents when they set clear rules about not using alcohol.
A standard drink is 12 oz. of beer (5%), 5 oz. of wine (12%), or 1.5 oz. of distilled spirits (40%). If it is a high Alcohol by Volume (ABV) beverage, one drink is not really just "one" drink. Binge drinking can result from not understanding standard drink size.
Prevention and law enforcement should work together. Partnerships are a cornerstone for achieving positive outcomes. Coalition membership fosters positive collaboration to prevent youth substance use, benefiting law enforcement and the community.
